How to Color Wood Furniture

Wood textures add warmth and depth to any coloring page, making your artwork feel cozy and realistic. If you’ve ever wondered how to color wood grain in an easy and effective way, this tutorial is for you!

Today, we’re using a background illustration from the Cottage Vibes a collection of hand-drawn countryside home scenes by Southern Lotus Coloring Book, available on our website and Amazon. This step-by-step guide will show you how to create a natural wood effect using Ohuhu Markers.

Materials You’ll Need:

- Ohuhu Markers (BR2, White Gel Pen)

- White Gel Pen

- A coloring page featuring wooden kitchen furniture (from Cottage Vibes Coloring Book)

Step-by-Step Guide to Coloring Wood Grain

Step 1: Draw the Wood Grain

Start by using BR2 to create the wood grain pattern. Use light, wavy strokes to mimic the natural grain of the wood. Don’t worry about making it perfect—natural wood patterns have slight imperfections, which add to the realism!
Tip: Follow the direction of the wood planks to make the texture look natural.

Step 2: Layer and Blend the Wood Grain

Continue adding layers of BR2, following the grain pattern until the entire wood surface is covered. Let the first layer dry before adding another to avoid smudging. This step will give your wooden surface a rich and dimensional look.

Step 3: Add Shadows for Depth

To enhance the texture, add shadows using BR2 again, but this time with shorter, concentrated strokes. Focus on the edges and where two wooden panels meet to give a natural depth effect.
Tip: Apply the color lightly first—you can always darken it later!

Step 4: Highlight with a White Gel Pen

Finally, take a white gel pen and lightly add small highlight strokes along some of the wood grain lines. This creates the effect of light reflecting off the wood, making it look polished and more realistic.
Tip: Don’t overdo the highlights—just a few subtle strokes are enough to make the wood pop!
