How to Color Brick

A rustic brick wall adds warmth and texture to any illustration, creating a cozy, vintage atmosphere. Whether you're coloring a Christmas fireplace, a countryside cottage, or an old brick alley, this tutorial will help you achieve a realistic, 3D brick pattern using Ohuhu markers and a white acrylic pen.

Today, we’ll be working with a brick wall background from the Xmas Times, a Southern Lotus Coloring Book filled with festive and charming hand-drawn illustrations. Let’s bring these bricks to life!

Materials You’ll Need:

- Ohuhu Markers (E110, BR2, YR5)

- A fine-tip pencil

- White acrylic pen

- A coloring page featuring a brick wall (from Xmas Times Coloring Book)

Step-by-Step Guide to Coloring a Rustic Brick Wall

Step 1: Create Brick Shapes with a Pencil

Before coloring, lightly sketch the brick outlines with a pencil to guide your shading. Make sure to create uneven shapes for a natural, aged look.

Step 2: Fill in the Bricks with E110, BR2, and YR5

Color each brick using a mix of three shades:
- E110 for warm beige tones
- BR2 for rich brown hues
- YR5 for a rustic, orange-red touch

Alternate colors randomly across the wall to create a natural variation.

Step 3: Add Shadows with the Same Colors

Deepen the look of each brick by using the same marker shades to darken one side of each brick. This step makes them look stacked and realistic.

Step 4: Stipple the Darkest Color in the Cracks

To create depth and texture, use BR2 and dot small stipples in the gaps between bricks. This will make the mortar lines more defined and give the wall a rougher look.

Tip: Add denser dots in shadowed areas for a more dramatic 3D effect.

Step 5: Add Highlights with a White Acrylic Pen

For a final touch, use a white acrylic pen to add small highlights along the edges and surfaces of some bricks. This gives a sunlit effect and makes the wall pop off the page.
