Capitone-style fabric, with its signature tufted pattern, adds a touch of elegance and coziness to furniture. Whether it’s a plush chair in a cozy corner or a fancy sofa, mastering this coloring technique will make your illustrations pop!
Today, we’re working on a capitone chair illustration from the Xmas Corner,a Southern Lotus Coloring Book featuring festive and cozy Christmas scenes. Follow this 4-step tutorial using Ohuhu markers to achieve a soft, 3D fabric effect.
- Ohuhu Markers (R5, R6)
- White gel pen
- Black glitter pen
- A coloring page featuring a tufted chair (from Xmas Corner Coloring Book)
Step 1: Base Layer with R5
Start by covering the entire chair with R5, a rich, warm red. This creates a smooth foundation and ensures a consistent color base.
Note: Apply even pressure and use light strokes to prevent streaking.

Step 2: Add Shadows with R6 and Blend with R5
To create depth and a realistic tufted effect, add R6 to the areas where the fabric folds inward or where the shadows naturally fall.
Now, take R5 again and blend the edges of R6 to soften the transition, making the fabric look plush and voluminous.

Step 3: Add Highlights with a White Gel Pen
To create the illusion of light reflecting off the fabric, carefully place white gel pen strokes on the raised areas of the tufted pattern.

Step 4: Use a Black Glitter Pen for the Small Circles
Finally, fill in the button tufts (small circular details) with a black glitter pen to make them stand out and enhance the luxurious look of the fabric. The glitter adds a subtle shine, mimicking the deep-set tufting effect seen in real capitone fabric.
