How to Draw Dogs: 4 Ways to Make Your Animal Coloring Pages Come Alive

Each dog holds a small world of its own a soft bark, a wagging tail, and a warmth that makes any house complete. Coloring dogs is not just about filling in colors; it's about capturing their soul.

Southern Lotus wants to bring you a guide so you can recreate four lovely dogs: the Poodle, the Golden Retriever, the Border Collie, and the Cairn Terrier.

1. How To Color The Poodle

The Poodle is like a little cloud of joy fluffy, elegant, and always looking perfectly groomed, famous for its dense, curly coat with a tight, fluffy texture.

  • Step 1: To express their gentle nature, start by coloring the entire body of the dog with a neutral brown (E120).
  • Step 2: Use a darker brown (E060) to add shadow along the outer edges and the folds of the fur (such as under the ears, below the chin, or between large curls).
  • Step 3: Use the darkest brown (E080) to draw small crescent moon shapes or 'C' shapes scattered across the surface of the fur. Focus more on the shadowed areas. These tiny curves mimic the voluminous, curly locks.
  • Step 4: Finally, use a cream acrylic marker (N531) to draw small highlights on the fur surfaces facing the light. Place the highlights on the peaks of the curls to simulate reflected light, making the coat look shiny and more vibrant.

2. How To Color The Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever exudes kindness with its thick, double coat, which is straight or slightly wavy, famous for its luxurious golden color.

  • Step 1: Color the base by blending two shades of yellow (from dark Y6 to light Y121), transitioning the color from dark to light areas.
  • Step 2: Use a darker yellowish brown (YR1 and YY6) to dot random dots into the areas that need shadow (under the neck, belly, behind the ears).
  • Step 3: Use a brown or black gel pen to draw short, random fur strokes scattered over the entire body. This step helps mimic individual strands of hair, making the coat look more detailed and realistic.
  • Step 4: Use a white gel pen to draw very small, fine fur strokes on the light areas. Concentrate these strokes on the top of the head, back, and shoulders to mimic sunlight shining, creating a sheen on the golden coat.

3. How To Color The Border Collie

The Border Collie is an active, curious, and focused breed. Collies often have a medium length, soft black/white or gray coat, which partly reflects their lively personality.

  • Step 1: Color the base layer with a light gray (CG020) for the areas with gray fur.
  • Step 2: Use a darker gray (BG050) and draw fur strokes/shadows using circular motions. Circular motions help soften the shadows and mimic the smooth, fluffy texture of the coat, avoiding sharp edges.
  • Step 3: Add another layer of shadow with an even darker gray (CG040) in the darkest areas (e.g., under the legs, the hidden parts of the body) to emphasize their sleek, flexible body.
  • Step 4: Use the dark gray (CG040) to draw the fur patches according to the desired pattern. Then, use a white acrylic marker (101) to add highlights.

4. How To Color The Cairn Terrier

The Cairn Terrier is a mischievous, brave, cheerful, and extremely curious dog. Its coat is shaggy but adorable.

  • Step 1: Color the base layer with a light yellow shade (Y050).
  • Step 2: Use a darker yellow (Y2) and start drawing short, random fur strokes covering the entire body. These quick, uneven lines create the natural "messy but cute" texture.
  • Step 3: Use a cream acrylic marker (N531) to add another layer of random fur strokes on top. This lighter color layer increases the shagginess and creates a complex depth effect, making the coat look denser.
  • Step 4: Carefully draw the face, paws, and ears. Use a dark brown acrylic marker (BR518) to draw random fur strokes along the edges and contours of the dog.
